Comment: This view turns to the north to look over the marl ravines just to the north of Kh. Qumran and over the flat slope at the foot of the line of rock hills in which natural caves are found. The large white food tent of the team camp can be seen just to the middle right of the picture. This camp was at the foot of the slope in which cave 2Q (=GQ19) lies, just south of 1Q (and numbered ‘16’ on Ziegler’s map). The view takes in the area where Cave 3Q and 11Q were also found: 3Q (GQ8) was located during the expedition, but Cave 11Q was not discovered until 1956.

The large white tent is shown being taken down in ASOR 1952-27.

This pictures was published by Harding and Reed (1953: 12, Fig. 8) with caption: ‘View from Khirbet Qumran looking north; area explored by the Qumran Caves Expedition, March 1953 (Photograph: ASOR). The tent is shown in photographs published in DJD III, Pl. I:1 and 2.
